President’s Message - November 2011

The end of the month is almost here, and we are already hit with a snow storm. The Club election of officers is 12/1/2011, and we will also vote on the Diver of the Year. Bill Werner is heading up this year's Paul Sauvageau Memorial Photo Contest. Check your email notices from Bill for the details. The officer slate is Meg Tennisen for President, Lauren Byrne for Vice President, Vinny Egizi for Treasurer, and Ellen Garvey for Secretary. It is great to see our active new members taking over our club for the next year. Next week’s meeting will feature a presentation from

Bill Buckley.

Tickets for the President's Banquet are selling fast; the date is 12/10/2011 at PCYC. Contact Vinny for tickets. You can buy them online, or pay by cash or check at a meeting, or have Vinny take your credit card payment at a meeting. If you pay your 2012 dues before the banquet you will receive $10.00-worth of raffle tickets for the banquet. A number of people have already taken advantage of this. Bobby Boyle will be attending this year, and has reserved a table for ten. Feel free to bring friends and relatives to our Annual Banquet. The more the merrier.

Tony Vieira will be heading up our New Year’s Day dive. We are hoping to beat last year’s turnout which featured 32 divers. Dodie Carvahlo is hosting the post dive New Year’s Day party at her home. The dive may be at White's Beach in Manchester to allow for greater parking. Check meetings and email notices for future details.

For this month’s Diver of the Month I choose Markus Diersbock for maintaining our web site. For Member of the Month I choose Mike Denneler for collecting, and relating the many Mike's moments he gathers each week.

-Jerry Shine’s father went in for minor surgery, has pneumonia. Jerry is in Florida.

-Jim F bumped into Art Channel – he’s good, still spry, not diving anymore

Old Business: Banquet – Dec 10th – here at PCYC. Vinny will buy business card stock to make banquet tickets.

Dive Talk:

-Adam, on Easy Diver, dove the NH, found something at the end but didn’t get it out, bunch of curved spikes. Next dive behind Kettle Island, very shallow; did 1hour dive.

-Lewis, Monday at OGB, some of best vis seen there in a while, 20-25’ Good dive

-Jack with Arnie on the NH; 64F, 5-

15’ vis; got 2 spikes..

-John S and Vinny at Fort Sewall left side, close to the rocks, vis 10-15’, lots of bugs all over the place, 1 each, got a scallop ate on the beach. Vinny did a second dive with Tony – right side,

bugs, bottles scallops, 1946 bottle Dr

Swift’s Root Beer. 84min bottom time,

61F, a lot of ghost traps.

-John F and Jim F, no one else at BK Sunday, ended up at Pebble – lot of people at OGB – 5-6” giant bugs, got 3 under 4” 26’ deep, 87 min dive, water warm clear, 15’ vis.

-Meg in Canada: First dive in Nova Scotia, a night dive at Sandy Cove, near Halifax. 61F, went to about 30’, vis was good, probably 15ish feet. Saw a bunch of little cod, real good dive. Then went to Newfoundland, stayed at OceanQuest to dive the Bell Island wrecks. First day did the PLM 27, a Free French ship sunk in 1942 by a U-Boat. Only one of the wrecks that still has the prop attached. It’s sitting in 100’, with the deck around 60-70’.

Vis was bad at only 30 feet – they’re used to around 80. - Second day got blown out due to Hurricane Ophelia coming up to Newfoundland. - Went back to Nova Scotia and wanted to dive more, but that was also blown out from some storms.

-Anyone going this Sunday? Graham will be at BK

General Discussion:

-Mike’s Moments:

-UnderCurrent –in the Bahamas, a state park banned hunting lionfish for 20 yrs, but it seems that grouper like to eat lionfish

-Article about the guy that was killed in FL when his tank exploded; broken tank was a pony bottle, not sure if air or O2; the tank was stolen. The deceased worked in a shop until he was caught stealing.

-Company in FL – In Sep found cargo ship that had 200mil of silver in it and another ship that sank in1917 in

8000’ water the 19 tons of silver – off Ireland. English gov’t only keeps

20% of the salvage

tickets are now on sale! Ticket price same as last year, $35 per ticket. If you pay dues before the banquet, you will get $10 in raffle tickets. Credit cards are accepted. Tickets have been given to the Commodore and his wife; we’ve offered a table to them as well. Private parties here, 1st hour within boundaries of door then after can spill out. Cash bar, we’ve asked for Fabrizo to be one of the bartenders. Aiming to sell 75 tickets.

Announcements: Dick Parnell, last of surviving charter member died last week. Was Pres in 1962, VP in 1960. Jerry Sutherland and Art Channel missed being charter members by 1 week. Mike D, Jerry and Marlene went to wake. Dick’s daughter gave compliments on the Facebook page.

Old Business: We need to set up a Banquet Committee to take care of the details for banquet prep.

New Business: The Play Station was sold for $150!

Dive Talk:

-Jeff and Graham at Folly Cove, right side. Jeff got a squishy bug. Saw a school of Pollock. Tip from Graham: remember to zip drysuit zipper all the way. 20’vis, 57F, 70-minutes. They spent 2 hours riding around Cape Ann looking for a calm spot. Even Plum Cove was washed out.

-John F. and Jim were with Cape Ann Charters; there were 7-8’ waves on Polling. Wound up going off Cathedral. 48-49F at 85-87’. Did simulated deco.

-Lauren at Sewall with new diver, she did excellently; conditions pretty terrible, surgey, hit 35-ish’ Not a long dive about 5’ vis but the other diver was stoked.

General Discussion:

-Mike’s Moments:

-Cyclops shark, guy fishes in Gulf of California, dissected two female blue sharks, both had 2 headed embryos.

Didn’t preserve them. Then, he got

another embryo with one eye, and there’s only 50 examples recorded. He preserved the fish, it’s legit with one eye

-New Year’s Day Dive open to all clubs/organizations. Maybe we’ll go to White Beach or Back Beach this year.

-Mike, past member, noted that Earl Quimby, passed away this week, he was a past officer. On way in, noticed Palmer Cove having their elections and Fred Pfiel’s son is running for rear commodore unopposed.

Old Business: Ellen Garvey accepted the nomination for secretary.

Dive Talk:

-Graham went Sunday to BK, was the only person there, drove around at high tide. This Sunday will try again!

-Tony went Sunday to the SUDS program underwater pumpkin carving contest, 25-30 people were there. Kids were really into it; nice to see younger people getting into diving. Good time and some nice pumpkins.

General Discussion:

-Dodie read an article in Rolling Stone on Australia, about warming climate and coral death. Expect that much of the world’s coral will be devastated by 2050, from climate change. Dodie was in Australia years ago with Frank; dead coral then was blamed on massive flooding.

-Mike’s Moments:

-Western Australia – shark has eaten

3people. Latest one was the youngest person in Panama City to get a Captain’s license. After they dragged him back into the boat, the shark surfaced and attacked the boat. One of the previous divers body not found, only his shredded swim trunks. The live scenes in Jaws were filmed in Australia.

-Tsunami debris is expected to hit Hawaii in 2013, West coast in 2014, tons of stuff.

-Siesta Key in FL: a 8’Lego man found in the surf. “No Real Than You Are” was written on his chest.

2other instances this type of thing happening. Brighton Beach in UK, and a Dutch beach.

-PETA suing Sea World in violation of 13th Amendment – the orcas being held in slavery. Marine Mammals Protections Act governs SeaWorld and other places. In US animals are property not individuals. Many blacks are objecting to the slavery connotation

-BlackBeard’s cannon pulled off of

NC coast, around the cannon bits of rope, lead shot, and gold dust, have gotten 12 cannons so far Queen

Anne’s Revenge. Largest underwater archaeological dig in the US.

2011 Photo Contest

Hello all amateur photographers,

The banquet and the annual photo contest are coming up soon. I have been selected/volunteered to host the photo contest this year. This year it is being named in honor of and as a memorial to Paul Sauvageau, our most prolific recent photographer. His photo entries will be missed. I hope other photographers will be entering photos. There is quite a void to fill.

I would like to receive entries by December 1st so I have time to sort them and place on the display boards. We can vote on them at the following meeting, December 8. I am thinking that the photos should be submitted as 8” x 10” prints, and please write the category on the back.

Depending on the entries, categories will be:

I hope we have enough entries to have many great choices in each category.

Diving /Camping Week in Vermont 2012

Week in Vermont diving and camping with Annette and Pat is currently scheduled for July 8 through 14, 2012. Put it on your calendar and plan to come up all or part of the week.

Dick Parnell – 10/13/2011

Dick Parnell, 80, passed away on October 13th.

Dick was Vice-President of the North Shore Frogmen’s Club in 1960, and President in 1962. He was the last surviving Charter Member of the North

Shore Frogmen’s Club. Dick arranged for the two page color photo of the Frogmen in Life Magazine in 1959. He was a Life Member, and was honored at the 50th Year Reunion for his 50+ years with the Frogmen.

We thank Dick for the numerous bug bag prizes he donated over the years, his presence at picnics and banquets, and remember him as an accomplished diver in the years before computers, BCs and even pressure gauges existed.

NEWS RELEASE, October, 2011

The Underwater Club of Boston and The Dive Patrol, Inc. announce the 61st edition of the Boston Scuba Show scheduled for 10 A.M. to 4 P.M., February 25, 2012 at the Holiday Inn and Resort in Marlboro, Massachusetts. The 2012 show will feature the films by Jonathan Bird (in-person 3-time EMMY Award Winner), and Fred Calhoun, with witty sayings, soft shoe routines, and more SCUBA than there’s time to tell. With Kerry and Linda Hurd, and directed by Alan Budreau, Jerry Shine will be receiving the Paul Revere Spike Award from the Underwater Club of Boston, presented by Arnie Pettiglio. The show will also offer a new film EGG ROCK, by Fred and Chris. Mr. Calhoun is an awards winning underwater motion picture producer and director, having won the Knights of Malta, Island of Malta, Film Festival (for LARGO), and the Conference for International Non-theatrical Events (CINE) award (for THE WALL).

Parking is always free at The Holiday Inn and Resort. We are at the intersection of routes 20 and 495 in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

Simultaneously, in another part of the Holiday Inn, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., The Dive Patrol will be offering the PSI scuba cylinder inspector certification course. PSI is the only recognized cylinder inspector training and certification program by DOT (the Department of Transportation, the real folks in charge of scuba cylinders). Expand your resume, become a certified cylinder inspector. Conducted by Dallas Edmiston, the in-advance course tuition is $275, checks payable to The Dive Patrol, Inc.

Tickets for the scuba show are only $20 each (use the savings for gas) and will be available at the door on the day of the program. The Bay State Council of Divers

Supporting and promoting the recreational diving community in Massachusetts.

The Bay State Council of Divers (BSC) is a diver’s advocacy group. The BSC monitors local, state and federal regulations that may affect the recreational diving community in Massachusetts. When required, the BSC represents the interests of the diving community in these matters.

The BSC serves as a liaison between dive clubs and dive stores to promote recreational diving activity in Massachusetts. All divers are encouraged to support the BSC with an annual contribution of $5. Your contribution will allow the BSC to continue to be a strong advocate for the recreational diving community in Massachusetts.
